An ancient cooking apple thought to date back to the middle ages and to be the second apple brought over by the Normans (after the Pearmain). Grown as a commercial crop by 13th century and said to have been named for its resemblance to the human head (for which "costard" was another term). It is a now a seemingly pretty rare variety. Stores for up to 3 months.
